Know about Buddhist Statues

Buddhist statues are representations of the Buddha, Bodhisattva, and other significant figures in Buddhism. They serve as focal points for meditation, reminders of the Buddha’s teachings, and symbols of various aspects of the path to enlightenment.

Types of Mudras used in Buddhist Statues

Meditation Posture (Dhyana Mudra): Dhyana Mudra is depicted sitting cross-legged hands resting in the lap, palms facing upward, with the right hand over the left. The posture represents serenity, inner peace, and meditation, symbolizing the enlightenment.

Preaching Gesture (Dharmachakra Mudra): Dharmachakra Mudra is shown sitting with both hands in front of his chest, forming a circle with the thumb and index finger. This gesture symbolizes the turning of the wheel of Dharma, representing teaching and the transmission of knowledge.

Reclining Posture (Parinirvana): The reclining posture commonly used for Buddha’s Parinirvana episode, signifying the end of suffering and the cycle of rebirth. He is depicted lying on his right side, head resting on a cushion or his right elbow, with his left arm along his body.

Protection Gesture (Abhaya Mudra): Abhaya Mudra can be seen standing or sitting posture with their right hand raised to shoulder height, palm facing outward, and the left hand resting in their lap. This gesture signifies protection, fearlessness, and the dispelling of fear.

Earth touching Gesture (Bhumisparsha Mudra): Bhumisparsha Mudra is shown seated with their left hand on their lap and their right hand touching the ground. This position represents the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment when he called the earth to witness his attainment of Nirvana.

Significance of the Buddhist Statue

Buddhist statues are not worshiped as deities but are used to inspire and focus meditation and reflection. Each statue represents a different aspect of the Buddha’s life and teachings, offering visual symbols of key principles such as enlightenment, wisdom, protection, and serenity.
